Speaker HastertOn June 12, 2015, CREW filed Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests with the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for records of communications from or to representatives of Dickstein Shapiro LLC, a lobbying firm that employed former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-IL), between January 1, 2009 and January 1, 2011. Former Speaker Hastert, who was recently indicted for allegedly violating banking laws, lobbied both DOD and DHS for Dickstein Shapiro clients soon after joining the firm.

CREW also filed a FOIA request with the George W. Bush Presidential Library for records of communications between the Bush White House and several members of Congress, including former Speaker Hastert, that relate to former Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL). Questions about former Speaker Hastert’s handling of revelations that former Rep. Foley made inappropriate advances toward congressional pages have been renewed in light of his indictment, which involves alleged efforts to cover up past sexual misconduct.
