CREW and Coalition Urge Congress to Pass FOIA Legislation Without Modification

On June 12, CREW joined coalition of open government organizations in signing a letter to House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) urging him to pass the FOIA Oversight and Implementation Act of 2015 in its current form. The letter explains that passage will lock in improvements likely to be accepted by the Senate. It notes that efforts by some to weaken the legislation, specifically with regard to how it would apply to entities that regulate the financial industry, were rightfully questioned and rejected during the committee's markup of the bill. The letter praises the House for updating Exemption 5 to help ensure a reduction in the amount of secret law to which Americans are subject.
