Bob McDonnell Worst Governor

Gov. McDonnell promoted the interests of donors and businesses that lavished gifts on his family.

Gov. McDonnell and his wife vigorously promoted the flagship product of a company run by a major McDonnell donor, Jonnie Williams, Sr. Mr. Williams has lavished the McDonnell family with gifts, including a vacation at his lake house and catering for the wedding of Gov. McDonnell’s daughter.

Several other businesses with interests before the state have given valuable gifts to Gov. McDonnell. The FBI and Virginia State Police are investigating whether the governor accepted gifts in exchange for official action, and a state attorney’s office appointed by the Virginia Attorney General is investigating whether Gov. McDonnell violated state disclosure laws.

  • Elected in 2009; ineligible to seek reelection due to term limits
  • Accepted gifts from major donors and businesses working with the state, and used his office to promote a product of one company that provided campaign donations and gifts
  • Under investigation by the FBI, Virginia State Police, and Richmond Commonwealth Attorney’s office
