Terry Branstad - Iowa

Terry Branstad Worst Governor

Gov. Branstad has made strides creating jobs in Iowa — for his donors.

Gov. Branstad appointed his top donor, Bruce Rastetter, to the Iowa Board of Regents and initiated a shakeup that allowed Mr. Rastetter to become board president in June 2013. Mr. Rastetter, founder of an ethanol company and CEO of an agricultural company, has been accused of using his position to promote a pro-agriculture agenda and stifle academic freedom at the state’s three universities.

Gov. Branstad additionally appointed Mr. Rastetter’s brother, Brent, also a major donor, to the state’s environmental oversight panel. Brent Rastetter owns a business that is regulated under clean water laws overseen by the same commission to which Gov. Branstad appointed him.

  • Elected in 2010; running for reelection in 2014; previously served four consecutive terms as governor between 1983 and 1999
  • Appointed major donors to board positions that overlap with their professional interests
